Dare I say it…I am excited about TOWIE coming back this evening (The only way is Essex for those of you who are not fans…you are really missing out). For some reason I love that program, yes it’s staged, yes there is a lot of fakeness, but I have to watch every episode. The awkwardness makes its additive.
This led me to thinking about our guilty pleasures. According to Wiki a guilty pleasure is: “something one enjoys and considers pleasurable despite feeling guilt for enjoying it. The “guilt” involved is sometimes simply fear of others discovering one’s lowbrow or otherwise embarrassing tastes.”
How many men enjoy watching X-factor on a Saturday night, yet do not want to admit it? Or secretly enjoy watching “Love Actually” but instead opt to excuse it by insisting that their wife or girlfriend made them watch it.
Our choice of guilty pleasure span many different forms; TV programs, music, hobbies, food etc. I am sure everyone of us has a CD that we love to sing out loud too in the car, only when we are alone? I bet you are thinking of yours right now… Ok so I am not longer a heart broken 14 year old girl but I still enjoy a singing along to Westlife…(what a confessions!).
Our chosen pleasures are a real eye opener to our true personality. Isn’t it our quirks that make us different and interesting? Unfortunately we seem to feel the need to hide them from others? Opting to appear like we confirm to the “norm”.
I personally take great pleasure in finding out another person’s guilty pleasures. It’s at that point you really feel like you have made it into their inner world, they trust you, you are actually starting to discover the “real” person. Ok so it might not be some great secret or intimate detail from their past but it’s still personal details that may not have been shared with many other people in the world and that’s what makes it special.
My new guilty pleasure is knitting. There is a long story that explains why I took this up (it involved the movie “Singing in the Rain”) but I am glad I did. I find it therapeutic and more interesting than just watching TV …I know, I know, I am only 27 but if guys in their 20’s can play Golf and smoke cigar’s what’s wrong with my knitting. Just imagine how good I will be when I am a knitting granny with all these years of practise?
So in order to share, here is a photo of my first knitting project:
Thats it for now, it would be great if you would comment and add details of your own guilty pleasures (keeping it clean of course)?
Here are the Quotes: …As there aren’t too many quotes on the topic of “Guilty Pleasures”, todays quotes are sourced from my own guilty pleasures:
You can mess with a lot of things, but you can’t mess with kids on Christmas.~ Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (Kevin McCallister)
I told you kids to stay out of my butt! ~ Toy Story (Mr. Potato Head)
“Baby, why do you give me such a hard time
I know he said he loves you more than I
That’s a lie
Let me change your mind
Baby, stop before you make a big mistake
Stop before you turn and walk away
Give me time
Let me change your mind
Oooh… Oooh… Oooh… Oooh…” ~ Westlife (Change your mind)
“I’ve learned to feel what I cannot see
But with you I lose that vision
I don’t know how to dream your dream
So I’m all caught up in superstition
I want to reach out and pull you to me
Who says I should let a wild one go free
Trying to catch your heart
Is like trying to catch a star
But I can’t love you this much baby
And love you from this far” ~ Boy Meets Girl (Waiting for a Start to Fall)
The “Gilmores Girls” is a true favourite so I couldn’t pick 1, so I picked 3:
Lorelai: You lost me at carrots, which was the first draft of ‘you had me at hello’.
Logan: Rory, you’re special.
Rory: Like “stop-eating-the-paste” special?
Luke: How about that one?
Lorelai: Too pale. Pale means sickly.
Luke: Or sunscreen.
Lorelai: Or mad cow disease.
Luke: Pale does not mean mad cow disease.
Lorelai: Have you ever had mad cow disease?
Luke: Twice last week and my coloring was great.
Thanks for reading. Bye bye xxx
